Greetings, from Charlotte, NC! I’m currently in the hotel getting ready to go cheer on the ‘Canes in Game 2 of the ACC Tournament today, but I thought I’d give you a recap of the first day before i went any further, since I know you are all begging for more boring info about me!
The day started (or should I say continued–no sleep was had) at 4 am, when the Basketball Band met at the School of Music to depart for Miami Airport. After a psychotic bus ride took us 65 mph down Red Road and landed us at MIA a good 20 minutes early, we enjoyed a comfortable half hour of standing and doing nothing while we waited for the ticketing counter to open.
Finally we made it on the plane, and 2 hours later found ourselves in quaint little Charlotte. Our first stop was an IHOP for breakfast (it was only about 9:15 by this point), and then we moved on to the hotel where we packed ourselves all into one conference room because our hotel rooms were not ready yet. Notice a theme here?
With 30 minutes until we were supposed to leave for the arena and no rooms, still, we had to get ready for the game in the conference room and adjoining bathroom. Despite the close quarters, everyone was ready and we rolled on time and arrived at the arena in time to see Florida State (BOO!) knock off Wake Forest. After a brief break, it was time to start the important game.
The game started with an 11-2 Miami run for the first 8 minutes of play. A time-out with 12:20 left in the first half rejuvenated NC State, and they came storming back to tie the game up at 14 in the next 4 minutes. After this, UM scored 9 unanswered points to build up a lead, and at halftime they led 24-17. Some interesting first-half stats:
- “Savior” Jack McClinton has yet to score a field goal
- James Dews (who’s number 23 was on my face) is leading the team in scoring
- Everyone in the UM Band has been awake for roughly 32 hours
The second half opens up with some sloppy basketball, with many turnovers, fouls, and missed free throws. Miami goes on another 8-0 run to push the lead to 38-23 and doesn’t look back, as they push forward and end up with a 63-50 victory. Some stats at the end of the game:
- McClinton ends with 8 points, nine below his regular-season average
- Dews leads the ‘Canes with 14 points (all because his number was on my face)
- Everyone in the UM band has been awake for roughly 33 hours
Today, the ‘Canes head back out onto the court to face the #4 (in the ACC) Virginia Tech Hokies. The game will take place at 2:30 pm EST on ESPN2. Go ‘Canes!!!
